VACATION AND TRAVEL

“Jamestown Settlement ships that can be boarded for touring”

I mentioned earlier that I’ve been to many Civil War battlefields and other such related sites while in Virginia. I’ve seen at least 15 Civil War related sites in this state! My 2 favorite ones are Manassas National Battlefield Park, which is where the first battle of the Civil War was fought, and Appomattox Courthouse, which is not really a courthouse but a village frozen in time were the Civil War ended. Both of these places I’ve been to more than once, and they are very spectacular looking in the fall foliage months. Both are worth the price of admission, but both are FREE. You will see the Henry Hill House, as well as the Stone House, Stone Bridge, and the Brawer Farm. Take a FREE guided tour or a self-guided tour which makes for a great stroll during the colorful fall months. This place has very nice marked hiking trails plus a great indoor museum.

Appomattox Court House is also equally nice to view! They have this large village of all preserved homes and businesses from 1865, just the way they looked back then. You will feel you’ve been transported back in time since everything there is as it was then.

(On April 9, 1865, the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia in the McLean House took place in the village of Appomattox Court House, Virginia signaled the end

of the nation's

largest war.)

You will also see a couple dozen original restored buildings that stood there during the Civil War, a museum, theater, Clover Hill tavern, residential homes, law office, jail, courthouse and much more. You could easily be there for 2 hours or more! Open 7 days a week except holidays with FREE parking.

If you want to take time off from all the walking and driving then you may want to go over to the city of Norfolk and take a Lunch or Dinner cruise on a climate controlled boat called, “Spirit of Norfolk". The lunch cruise is the best way to see the fall scenery along the shoreline for two hours along the Elizabeth River with musical entertainment. They even cruise on Thanksgiving Day! See website for more details!
