VACATION AND TRAVEL
resting spot of Abraham Lincoln, his wife, and three of his sons, which are inside this 117-foot-high large tomb. Inside the tomb is a tour docent who will answer all your questions.
Now, in the downtown area, you will love this next FREE attraction, which is the “Abraham Lincoln Home.” You need to go over to the nearby visitor center, which houses a FREE museum and video presentation, and also, you will get your FREE guided tour ticket for the inside of presentation, and also, you will get your FREE guided tour ticket for the inside of
his house which is in walking distance of the visitor center.
While you are over at the nearby house, you will see the entire neighborhood that has been fully restored with a dirt street and wooden plank sidewalks. This entire street looks like it could be placed in Greenfield Village in Dearborn. Make sure you bring your camera because there are many photo opportunities in Springfield.
Also, in walking distance only a few blocks from the house is the “Lincoln Depot,” which is where Abraham Lincoln gave his farewell address before

boarding a train at this depot to take his 12-day journey to Washington DC. This is also the same depot that brought his body back to Springfield after his assassination to be interred at Oakridge Cemetery.
While you are strolling through town, walk over to the “Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices.” This is an 1840-41 three story building where Abraham Lincoln practiced law with his law partner Herndon between 1843 to about 1852. You will receive a FREE guided tour with a tour docent in period clothing of that era. This place is still under renovation as I am writing this. You will see the desk there where he wrote his inaugural speech for the presidency back in 1860. The only charge in the town of Springfield is the “Abraham Lincoln Museum and Library.” This is by far the best Presidential museum I’ve visited out of 5 different presidential museums I’ve visited over the years. It’s worth the paid admission! There is a lot to do there that is FREE other than what I listed. that’s worth investigating.
This next attraction is also historic in nature, and that is the “Thomas Lincoln Log Cabin Historic Site,” which is home to Abe's father Thomas, and his step mother Sarah Bush Lincoln. This is located on 86 acres of land, about southeast, which is 8 miles south of Charleston off the beaten path. I’ve been there myself, and it was a very good attraction to spend some time at.
This FREE attraction starts at the visitor center with a video shown with exhibits to see. Outside you will see the original 1840’s site of Thomas Lincoln and his neighbor Stephen Sergeant’s
