farms near one another, with animals to see on this living active farm. There are volunteers on both farms dressed in period outfits to give you the complete history. The nearby Shiloh Cemetery is where you will see the burial site of Thomas and his wife Sarah.

The next FREE attraction is the “National Great Rivers Museum,” located in the city of East Alton. This museum and parking are FREE of charge. The National Great Rivers Museum at Melvin Price Locks and Dam is dedicated to telling the story of the the Mississippi River from her grand history and cultural significance, to her ecological importance and role as a transportation corridor. The museum has 20 interactive displays and exhibits plus an aquarium. While you are there, take a FREE one hour guided tour of the dam, which is next door.

which is next door.

Lastly, is the “John Deere Harvest Works,” which is in the city of East Moline. This is a 90-minute factory tour which is open to the public, and it’s FREE of charge. To take this tour you need to reserve it two days in advance. You can submit an online tour request, and also, visit their site for more details about the tour. You will see the making of agriculture equipment from start to finish, all from the comfort of a tram ride being pulled by a tractor.

This particular state has many other FREE attractions I have not listed because it would take two complete articles to list them all, but the ones I listed are the top of the line and best rated ones of the bunch. The cities of Chicago and Springfield have more FREE attractions to see out of every other city, some of which can last 30 minutes, and others, 2 hours depending on your schedule. I saw almost everything on this list as a rest stop on my way driving further west, but many of these attractions can be a planned stop. Have fun and enjoy!
