TYRANNOSAURUS

REX

KING OF THE DINOSAURS

DINOSAUR SPOTLIGHT

Much of the diet of T-Rex is still a controversial topic but what we know for sure is that it was a carnivore that feasted on animals. The controversy, though, lies within whether it was a scavenger or a hunter and whether it hunted in packs or alone.

To this day, more than 50 Rex skeletons have been unearthed in North America all dating from the late Cretaceous and at least one of them contained soft tissue and proteins.

One of the biggest exposures that the king of the dinosaurs had in the media was through the Jurassic Park movie series where it was depicted as a giant monster with very weak vision only able to detect motion, but that issue was actually and ironically put into question a little before the first Jurassic Park movie was released. Various studies have led to very surprising results, because as it turns out, Rex who supposedly had very bad vision ended up having probably the best vision in the animal kingdom since it was able to detect colours, just like crocodiles and birds. Additionally, that exceptional eye sight is explained by their skull shape which permits a perfect alignment of the eyes allowing wide binocular vision. In fact, the disposition of their eyes is similar to humans leaving no blind spots. That vision capacity was so exceptional and excellent that it's way better than a human's, an eagle's and even a hawk's eye sight permitting Rex to identify objects as far away as 1.6 to 6 kilometers.

As for vocalisation, studies have led to conclusions that the T-Rex wasn't able to roar but was able to make low-frequency sounds by closed-mouth vocalisation much like birds. That was observed by scanning its skull fossil and analyse the outlines of the hearing organs which show that it was especially good at picking up low-frequency sounds.

Additionally, T-Rex, just like other Tyrannosaurs, possessed feathers on its back as well as scales.
