With an abundance of accommodation in addition to traditional pubs and tearooms for refreshments enroute , driving along Cornwall ’ s distinctive narrow lanes is pure pleasure . From Perranporth we take the scenic B3276 coast road towards our base for the next couple of days , the Cross House Hotel , a charming Georgian house in Padstow . “ I take it you lads want the full English ,” says the landlady , the next morning , in an accent as thick as Cornish clotted cream . She appears several minutes later carrying plates piled high with thick bacon , sausages , tomatoes , eggs , toast and mushrooms and places them on the table . “ That should keep you going for your eighteen holes at St . Enodoc .”
We make our way to the Chough Bakery , a small family-run craft bakery based at the quayside , which has been operating for nearly 30 years . Their traditional pasties have a filling of locally sourced beef , potato , onion and swede and are famous for their extra dollop of ' Cornishness ' in the form of some clotted cream . We stock up on a bag of their prize-winning pasties ( they were Cornish Pasty World Champions in 2016 ) and negotiate the ultra-narrow lanes of the village in our hire car towards St . Enodoc Golf Club on the other side of the estuary .
Before our afternoon round , there ' s the opportunity to explore the picturesque fishing village of Padstow . The sunny spring morning is punctuated with the raucous cries of seagulls as we stroll past shops selling beach mats , postcards and buckets and spades . Down at the harbour , colourfully-painted trawlers come and go , as salty characters load off their catch of crab and mackerel , destined for Padstow ' s fish-and-chip shops . If you don ’ t fancy fish and chips , there ’ s always that other local culinary delight - the Cornish pasty .
