South of St Ives near the milestone of Land ’ s End , Cape Cornwall Golf & Leisure has the distinction of having the ‘ First and Last 18-hole Golf Course in Britain .’ Although it ' s not a world class track , it can be worth a visit for its challenging holes and spectacular coastal views , plus its close proximity to the off-course attractions of the filming locations of popular BBC series Poldark , sacred stone circles , old tin mines and fabulous walks along the coast including sections of the 630-mile South West Coast Path . But we are heading north up the coast towards Perranporth Golf Club , widely regarded as one of the finest links in the south of England .
The club saw its inception in 1927 in a blaze of glory with four greenkeepers , a full professional , a steward and stewardess for their fine clubhouse , and a course laid out by five-times British Open champion James Braid who also designed Turnberry and Gleneagles . There are some fabulous views from high up and several fascinating blind tee shots , and Braid who loves hidden holes , has excelled himself on these .
With an abundance of accommodation in addition to traditional pubs and tearooms for refreshments enroute , driving along Cornwall ’ s distinctive narrow lanes is pure pleasure . From Perranporth we take the scenic B3276 coast road towards our base for the next couple of days , the Cross House Hotel , a charming Georgian house in Padstow . “ I take it you lads want the full English ,” says the landlady , the next morning , in an accent as thick as Cornish clotted cream . She appears several minutes later carrying plates piled high with thick bacon , sausages , tomatoes , eggs , toast and mushrooms and places them on the table . “ That should keep you going for your eighteen holes at St . Enodoc .”
