Many golfers will have heard of St . Enodoc Golf Club but not all will have made the pilgrimage to this wonderful links often appearing in World Top 100 listings . Another James Braid layout , St . Enodoc founded in 1890 is by no means a long course , it measures just 6,557 yards from the back tees - but its skillful design dictates that it will not surrender to just a brash , powerful game . At St . Enodoc you can imagine taking on the game in its ancient form , like the Scottish forefathers who strode the sheep-cropped turf with a handful of hickory shafts , a pocketful of gutta perchas and the fresh salty air whistling past their faces .
Although there are many great holes at St . Enodoc , the par-4 6th will literally stop you in your tracks as you gaze in wonder at the ‘ Himalaya ’ bunker , which is believed to be the largest sand-hill on any British course . It rises 80 feet above the fairway , totally eclipsing your view of the green which lies 100 yards beyond . Another terrific hole is the 168-yard 15th , which is the start of a strong finish . A deep ravine lies between the tee and the green on this beautiful downhill par-3 , and anything slightly mishit or under-clubbed is destined to be in the bottom of it . The wonderful views of the Camel Estuary from the tee as you prepare to hit off is worth the green fee alone .
Trevose ' s rolling wide fairways , with a number of holes running alongside the Atlantic breakers which crash onto the golden sands of Constantine Bay . One of the standout holes is the par-5 5th , with the green perched right on the coast with views up the rocky coastline to the north .
After our round , we rest our pints of well-earned Cornish Bitter on the wide arms of a bench outside the clubhouse and survey the scene . Keen golfers still out on the fairways appear as tiny coloured specks , as the late afternoon sun casts long shadows across the links land , defining every undulation , bump and hollow . We raise our glasses to a great trip and seaside golf at its very best ...
