Largest of the spruces, 125' to 180' tall, and 3' to 5' in diameter. Needles 1/2" to 1 1/8" long, linear, flat to flattened diamond shaped in corss section; yellowish green. Needles tend to be perpendicular to the twig. Cone: 1 1/2" to 3 1/3" long, oblong shape; scales yellowish tan, papery and somewhat stiff. Bark: thin and scaly on young trees; on larger trees usually less than 1" thick, grey or brown and scaly (Randall et al 1988).

Habitat:
Moist, well drained sites along the coast, rarely more then 50 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Range from central British Columbia to Nothern California. Elevation range from sea level to 4000 feet in the north, seldom grows above 1800 feet in the Pacific North West. Generally a tidewater and fogbelt species (Randall et al 1988).
