Habitat:

Occurs on moinst well drained sites in sun or partial shade. Range form southern Alaska to northwestern California and eastward throughout the Rocky Mountains (Randall et al 1988).

Shrub or small tree, leave deciduous, alternate and simple 1" to 2" long and oval; upper 1/4 to 3/4 of margin serrated; lower part of margin entire.

Flowers white with long strap like petals in short racemes. Fruit small, red to dark purple to black pomme up to 1/2" in diameter. Twig slender and smooth; reddish brown when young, greyisg brown in older wooody twigs. Bark thin, brown and tinged with red (Randall et al 1988).
