Habitat:
long streams and in moist bottoms, and on moist bottom slopes. Ranges from southeastern Alaska southward through western British Columbia, on the west side of the Cascade Mountains, south in to southern California. Elevation range from sea level to 3500 feet (Randall et al 1988).

A tree 30' to 120' feet tall and 1' to 3' in diameter. Leaves, 3" to 6 " long and half as wide, shiny green to yellow green and smooth above; paler along the viens and underside. margins doubly serrated to slightly lobed. Fruit is tiny nutlets with thin lateral wings, cone 1/2" to 1" long. Bark ash grey to greyish-brown, smooth along upper bole and flattened, irregular plated ridges near the base (Randall et al 1988).
