Habitat:
Found on moist well drained, sandy and gravelly soils, from southwestern Oregon to southern California. Elevation range sea level to 4,700 feet (Randall et al 1988).
Evergreen tree 60' to 100' tall and 1' to 3' in diamter with a dense broad crown. Leaves oblong, 3" to 5" long, thick, sitff, and leathery; dark green above, smooth and bluish white underneath; margins entire or coarsely toothed. Fruit oval nut, borne singly 3/4" to 1 1/4" long.
Twigs stout and round. Bark 3/4" to 1 1/2" thick with narrow furrows and broad rounded ridges checkers with square plates (Randall et al 1988).
