The native range of the species is confined to two small relict populations, at Cypress Point in Pebble Beach and at Point Lobos near Carmel, California. The species also ranges southwestern Oregon to Sandiego California (Randall et al 1988).
Evergreen tree to 80' tall. Leaves persistant, scale like, appressed in opposite pairs on the twig, margins finely toothed; glandular and resin dotted. Flowers staminate cones cylindrical and terminal; cones round, woody and leathery; 1/2" to 1 1/4" in diameter; 3 to pais of scales, wrinkled. Bark rough and fibrous (Randall et al 1988).
