ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN
A property in Mallorca
features on the wish list
of many holidaymakers.
If you would like to build
your dream home here,
you can rely on the
expertise of German
architects who will deal
with multilingual service
providers, local bureau-
cracy and regional
peculiarities. One of these
is Klaus W. Herbert, well
known for his clean,
bright, spacious designs.
Some of his most recent
projects can be seen here.

“Clean, bright, spacious”
You need Mallorca. A few years ago the
tourist office used this slogan to promote the
Island’s many advantages, which attract more
than three million holidaymakers every year.
Some of them remain, look for a property and
become at least part-time residents.
It is to just this group that estate agents,
architects and interior designers in Mallorca
offer services ranging from the purchase of a
plot to choosing the art works to finish off their
dream villa. A well-known name among them
is Klaus W. Herbert, an architect from south
Germany. He first presented himself back in
2011 with his timeless designs in Bauhaus
style. With their large frameless windows and
living areas composed of two-storey inter-
locking cubes in pure white, they provided a
stark contrast to the popular Mediterranean-
style house with its arches and pillars. Since
then, Herbert has been busy in both Germany
and Mallorca. When drawing plans he follows
the basic principles of feng shui. Close colla-
boration with his clients results in some breath-
taking designs, like those for an over-sized
entrance hall with a 1.5 tonne chandelier
hanging in the centre. Entry is via a block-step
stairway – without railings – coming out of a
concrete wall. Opposite it, a glass façade
affords a view of the lake as it changes through
the seasons. Another of his designs was not
just named the Butterfly, sections of the walls
were actually curved.
For a Russian couple he designed a curved
low-rise building to symbolically reflect the
nature of his clients, as they liked to welcome
friends and family with open arms. With such
innovative designs for modern private villas
and office complexes, Mallorca architect Klaus
W. Herbert has made a name for himself as an
ambassador for contemporary integrated
design. He recently finished work on a new
office complex for K-Active near Aschaffenburg
that has two penthouses on the top floor where
guests can stay overnight. To ensure harmony
among the staff, he involved in the design feng
shui expert Bettina Czajkowski, who specia-
lises in the centuries-old philosophy. The goal
of this Chinese teaching is to enable people,
families and groups to live a long and healthy
life in which joy, prosperity and harmony
prevail. And this is certainly aided by a breath-
taking sea view.
