Central Mountain Marching Band Wraps Up Busy Weekend with Strong Finish
Saturday, October 11th, was a busy day for the Central Mountain Marching Band. After performing in the 76th Annual Flaming Foliage Parade in Renovo, the band traveled to Williamsport Area High School to compete in a Cavalcade of Bands marching band competition. This marked the second and final competition of the season for the Wildcats. The previous weekend, the band competed in Wellsboro as part of the Tournament of Bands circuit, earning a first-place finish in their division with a score of 69.440.
Using the judges’ feedback from that event, the band spent the week refining their show- and the improvements showed. At Williamsport, they earned a score of 75.15, good for second place in their class.
Throughout the fall, the Central Mountain Marching Band has performed at several events, including the Tussey Mountain Band Festival, multiple community parades, home football games, and the away game at Mifflin County. The band continues to rehearse and polish both its field show and parade performances. Still ahead this season is the Lock Haven Holiday Parade.
Looking ahead, the band hopes to add more competitions to its calendar next year- and perhaps even host a show of its own. Congratulations to the band students and staff on a great season!
' A Magical Experience '--- Liberty-Curtin Hosts Writing Olympics
The students at Liberty-Curtin Elementary School recently got a lesson in creativity, and had a chance to see their stories come to life. Children’ s author, Alan St. Jean, visited the school over the course of a week and worked with the students to craft a story. From brainstorming creative ideas to drawing the book illustrations, St. Jean encouraged the kids to think outside the box and create a compelling storyline.
The Writing Olympics is a creative event that enhances a students’ writing skills, as well as their collaboration skills. At the end of the week, when all of the stories were finished, they were put to the test in front of a panel of judges consisting of Liberty-Curtin Principal, Brett Umbenhouer, Keystone Central School District Superintendent Dr. Francis Redmon, Magisterial District Judge Heidi Wright, and Express Correspondent Breanna Hanley.
“ It’ s a great opportunity for the kids to get to work with a children’ s author,” said Umbenhouer,“ He does an amazing job of taking their thoughts and bringing them to life right in front of their eyes. It’ s kind of like a magical experience for the kids to see.”
The children were given full creative control over the story, from the characters and conflicts to the illustration and design process. The older students worked with St. Jean to actually publish a book that will be released around February or March.
St. Jean has previously released a book with Woodward Elementary students titled,“ A Cactus Attacked Us,” using the same process.
