The Youth Zone is being constructed on previously undeveloped land, creating a new community destination without displacing existing housing. The facility has been planned to complement the wider regeneration of South Bristol while providing dedicated space focused entirely on the needs of young people.
Beyond the physical building, the project reflects the OnSide Youth Zone model, which has already been established in towns and cities across the UK. These centres provide professionally staffed youth provision throughout the year, with activities ranging from sport and creative arts to employability support, mentoring and wellbeing services. Membership is intended to remain affordable, with an annual fee of £ 5 and individual visits costing 50 pence.
Galliford Try has described the scheme as an opportunity to deliver a facility with a lasting social impact. During the project’ s groundbreaking ceremony, representatives from the contractor joined local partners, young people and community ambassadors to mark the start of construction, underlining the collaborative nature of the development.
When completed, 224 will provide far more than a new building. Every element of the design has been planned around participation, giving young people the freedom to move between sport, creativity, education and social spaces under one roof. The result will be a purpose-built environment where the building itself supports the wider objective of helping young people develop confidence, skills and aspirations for the future.
