GALLIFORD TRY- SOUTH BRISTOL YOUTH ZONE

Galliford Try is delivering South Bristol Youth Zone, a purpose-built facility designed to provide thousands of young people with access to sport, creative activities and youth services as part of a major investment in the city’ s future.
Construction is progressing on South Bristol’ s new Youth Zone, known as 224, where Galliford Try is creating a purpose-built facility that will become one of the largest dedicated youth centres in the South West. Located close to the junction of Hartcliffe Way and Hengrove Way, the development has been designed to provide young people with a safe, welcoming environment offering year-round opportunities for learning, recreation and personal development.
The project is being delivered through a partnership between national charity OnSide, local youth charity Youth Moves and Bristol City Council. Once operational, the Youth Zone will enable Youth Moves to expand its reach, supporting an additional 4,000 young people aged eight to 19, or up to 25 for those with additional needs.
The building itself has been shaped around flexibility and variety rather than a single purpose. Inside, young people will have access to more than 20 activities during each session, with facilities including a four-court sports hall, indoor climbing wall, fitness suite, boxing and martial arts room, music studios, performing arts spaces, arts and crafts rooms, film and multimedia facilities, project rooms and a teaching kitchen. A café will also provide hot meals at low cost, while externally the development includes a floodlit multi-use games area.
The name“ 224” was chosen by young people themselves following a city-wide consultation involving more than 4,000 participants. The winning name represents“ today, tomorrow and forever”, reflecting the ambition for the Youth Zone to become a lasting resource for future generations across South Bristol.
Galliford Try began the main construction programme in late 2024 after completion of enabling works, including the delivery of a new access road to the site. Since then, the project has moved steadily through its construction phases, with structural works advancing throughout 2025. Recent progress has seen the steel frame completed, roof installation underway and external cladding beginning to take shape.
