Greenshaw High School is undergoing one of the most extensive school redevelopment programmes in London, replacing ageing buildings with a modern campus designed to support nearly 2,000 students while creating significantly more outdoor space.
A major transformation is underway at Greenshaw High School in Sutton, where a comprehensive rebuilding programme is reshaping a campus that has expanded far beyond its original design capacity. Delivered through the Department for Education’ s School Rebuilding Programme, the project will replace much of the existing estate with modern teaching accommodation designed to meet the needs of a growing school community.
Originally constructed during the late 1960s for around 590 pupils and 34 members of staff, the school has grown substantially over the decades. Today, Greenshaw High School serves approximately 1,900 students supported by around 250 staff, placing increasing pressure on buildings that were never intended to accommodate a school of this scale.
Rather than extending the existing buildings further, the redevelopment adopts a different approach. Around 70 % of the current accommodation is being demolished and replaced with purpose-built three-storey teaching blocks. Building upwards allows the overall footprint of the school to be reduced, creating additional outdoor areas for sport, recreation and landscaping.
Bowmer + Kirkland has been appointed by the Department for Education as the main contractor for the redevelopment. The programme has been carefully phased to enable the school to remain operational throughout construction, with temporary teaching accommodation installed before demolition of the main classroom blocks began.
The new campus has been designed to improve both teaching facilities and the day-to-day experience of pupils. Modern science laboratories, art rooms, drama studios and music practice rooms will replace ageing specialist accommodation, while every department will benefit from brighter, more efficient classrooms. A dedicated learning resource centre will also provide independent study space that the school has not previously been able to offer.
Improving circulation across the site has been another important objective. Narrow corridors and congested movement routes have long presented challenges as pupil numbers increased. The replacement buildings have been planned to provide more efficient circulation, helping students and staff move more easily between teaching spaces during the school day.
Environmental performance has also influenced the design. The redevelopment will replace energy-intensive buildings with modern accommodation that offers improved efficiency and reduced running costs, while the more compact layout releases land for additional green space and outdoor learning opportunities.
