Haverfordwest Museum. Existing displays will be replaced with new exhibitions, while additional interpretation throughout the castle grounds will allow visitors to engage with the site’ s history before entering the museum buildings.
Outside the buildings, the redevelopment has reshaped the Inner Bailey to create a flexible outdoor events space. New landscaping has been completed to support concerts, performances, community gatherings and seasonal events, enabling the castle to play a more active role in the cultural life of the town.
Recent construction milestones demonstrate the pace of progress. Structural works to the former gaol have included stabilising the building’ s core, replacing its two-level roof structure and preparing the interior for the installation of exhibition spaces. These works are being undertaken while carefully protecting the historic fabric of the listed building. Alongside the physical redevelopment, the project team has been working with heritage specialists and exhibition designers to shape the future visitor experience. Funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund has supported the design phase for the new interpretation, with specialist museum designers The Creative Core appointed to develop the attraction’ s content and layout.
Improving accessibility has also been built into the programme. New routes through the castle grounds, enhanced signage and improved links with Haverfordwest town centre are intended to make the site easier to explore while encouraging visitors to spend more time within the wider town.
The redevelopment represents a different approach to heritage investment. Rather than preserving the castle as a monument alone, the project is designed to create an
active destination where history, education, community events and tourism sit alongside one another. The combination of restored historic buildings, outdoor event space and modern interpretation aims to broaden the site’ s appeal for residents, schools and visitors alike.
When completed, Haverfordwest Castle will offer far more than a restored landmark. It will become a place where the history of Pembrokeshire is experienced through its buildings, exhibitions and public spaces, giving one of Wales’ most significant medieval sites a renewed role at the centre of the county town.
