119 provide flexibility for both sporting activity and future operation. Exposed steelwork has been incorporated into the completed interiors, becoming part of the architectural character rather than being concealed behind finishes.
Constructing the main pool hall required a series of 22-metre roof beam assemblies, each pre-assembled on the ground before being lifted into position. The project team also installed galvanised structural steel within the pool environment to provide long-term protection against corrosion in areas exposed to high humidity.
Environmental performance has been a key consideration throughout the design process. The leisure centre will operate as an all-electric building, supported by a fabricfirst approach that reduces energy demand through high-performance insulation and airtight construction. Solar photovoltaic panels will be installed across the flat roof areas, contributing renewable electricity as Wiltshire Council works towards its carbon-neutral ambitions.
The surrounding public realm forms an important part of the wider scheme. New landscaping, planting and improved walking, cycling and wheeling routes will connect the leisure centre with neighbouring community areas, creating better links through this part of the town while encouraging active travel to and from the facility.
As the construction programme advances, specialist leisure equipment will begin to arrive on site, followed by installation and commissioning of both swimming pools.
External works, landscaping and final testing will complete the programme ahead of the planned opening by the end of 2026.
The project reflects a broader shift in the design of public leisure facilities. Alongside its sporting provision, the new Trowbridge Leisure Centre has been planned as a civic building that responds to its surroundings through architecture, sustainability and public space. As construction moves into its final phases, the development is beginning to reveal the form and character of a facility intended to serve the town for decades to come.
