TROWBRIDGE LEISURE CENTRE
A new leisure centre is taking shape in the heart of Trowbridge, where Wiltshire Council’ s flagship project is combining contemporary architecture, low-carbon design and modern health and fitness facilities within one of the county’ s largest public investments.
The skyline of Trowbridge is changing as construction progresses on a new leisure centre that has been designed to become a landmark civic building as well as a modern health and wellbeing destination. Located on the former East Wing site opposite County Hall, the development is being delivered by Pellikaan Construction for Wiltshire Council, with Alliance Leisure acting as development partner through the UK Leisure Framework.
Rather than replicating a conventional sports centre, the design has taken inspiration from Trowbridge’ s industrial past. Two distinctive pitched roofs reference the warehouses and textile mills that once defined the town’ s woollen cloth industry, creating a building that responds to its local context while establishing a strong architectural identity. Roberts Limbrick led the architectural design, with Stantec providing structural engineering services and Adstone Construction delivering the steel frame.
The building has now reached a significant construction milestone, with the structure officially weather-tight.
Completion of the roof and external envelope has allowed the project to move into the next stage of the programme, where attention has shifted from structural construction to internal fit-out. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing installations are now progressing alongside the formation of internal partitions, floor finishes and specialist leisure facilities.
Once complete, the new centre will provide a six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, a learner pool, a 120-station fitness suite, two exercise studios, an immersive cycle studio, a dedicated Live Well suite, an adventure play area, community meeting space and a café. The facility has been designed to cater for users of all ages while supporting health, fitness and social wellbeing within a single destination.
The engineering behind the building is equally distinctive. More than 240 tonnes of structural steel have been used to create the long-span roof structures above the swimming pools, allowing large column-free internal spaces that
