117 installed to keep the building dry while preparations for the full construction programme continued.
The project has been made possible through a £ 2.1 million grant from Arts Council England’ s Museum Estate and Development Fund. This investment supports the urgent conservation works needed to remove the building from the Heritage at Risk Register while preserving one of the most important surviving structures associated with the former Evesham Abbey.
Although construction is centred on repairing the historic building, the wider vision extends well beyond conservation. A second phase of the programme will reimagine the museum itself, introducing new galleries, improved interpretation, enhanced collection care and more accessible displays. Plans also include the creation of a dedicated learning space for schools and community groups together with redesigned gardens reflecting the history of both the Almonry and the Vale of Evesham.
To support this next stage, the museum has secured a development grant of £ 393,519 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The funding will allow detailed planning for the museum transformation while enabling staff, volunteers and local communities to contribute to the stories and exhibitions that will shape the revitalised attraction.
Throughout the construction programme, the museum collections have been carefully removed and stored, while the Tourist Information Centre and gift shop have temporarily relocated across Merstow Green. For the first time in decades, the historic interiors have been emptied, allowing conservation specialists unrestricted access to parts of the building that have long remained hidden behind displays and modern alterations.
The restoration of The Almonry is not simply about repairing an important building. It is an opportunity to reveal the craftsmanship of a late medieval structure, protect centuries of history and create a museum equipped to serve future generations. As DA Cook progresses the conservation works, the project is ensuring that one of Worcestershire’ s most recognisable historic landmarks continues to play a central role in the cultural life of Evesham for many years to come
