109 displaying both the Welsh Football Collection and the expanded Wrexham Museum collections within a modern visitor environment.
The football galleries will explore the history of the game across Wales, celebrating achievements from grassroots football through to the international stage. Wrexham’ s place as the birthplace of the Football Association of Wales, founded in the city in 1876, provides a central theme running throughout the visitor experience.
Alongside construction, extensive work has taken place to shape the museum’ s future content. Public consultation has helped influence exhibition themes, while the project team has worked to develop the Welsh Football Collection, bringing together memorabilia, photographs, archives and personal stories that reflect the game’ s importance to communities across Wales.
The redevelopment has attracted support from multiple funding partners, including Wrexham County Borough Council, the Welsh Government, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Wolfson Foundation and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Together, these organisations are supporting the creation of what is expected to become a major cultural destination for both Wales and the city of Wrexham.
Recent project updates indicate that the construction programme continues to make good progress, with the scale of the internal transformation now becoming increasingly visible. As structural works advance, attention is gradually shifting towards the installation of exhibition spaces and the interpretation that will bring the museum’ s collections to life.
When the museum opens in 2026, visitors will encounter far more than a collection of football memorabilia. The redevelopment will reconnect a historic civic building with a new generation of visitors, creating a cultural venue that celebrates both the national story of Welsh football and the local history that has shaped Wrexham for generations.
