FOOTBALL MUSEUM OF WALES & WREXHAM
Construction is progressing on the Football Museum of Wales and Wrexham Museum, a landmark cultural project that will transform a Grade II listed building into a national attraction celebrating Welsh football alongside the history of Wrexham.
For more than 150 years, Wrexham has occupied a unique place in the story of Welsh football. Now, that heritage is being brought together with the city’ s own history through the creation of the Football Museum of Wales and Wrexham Museum, a major redevelopment that is reshaping one of the city’ s most recognisable historic buildings.
The project is centred on the former County Buildings on Regent Street, home to Wrexham Museum since 1996. Following its closure for redevelopment in late 2023, the Grade II listed building is undergoing an extensive programme of refurbishment, restoration and extension ahead of its planned reopening in summer 2026.
Rather than creating an entirely new building, the project has focused on adapting and extending the existing museum. Construction is being carried out by SWG Construction, with the works designed to preserve the historic character of the building while creating contemporary gallery spaces capable of housing a national museum collection.
Known throughout the development phase as the“ Museum of Two Halves”, the scheme brings together two complementary attractions under one roof. One will tell the story of Welsh football, from grassroots clubs through to the national teams, while the other will present the history of Wrexham and the surrounding region through expanded museum galleries and collections.
Construction has involved significant structural alterations to the existing building. Early works included removing later additions to reopen the original internal courtyard, carefully dismantling the glazed frontage and creating new atrium and gallery spaces across the ground and first floors. Alongside the new construction, conservation specialists are restoring historic elements of the listed building.
Museum designers Haley Sharpe Design and architects Purcell have developed the project alongside Wrexham Council’ s museum team. The completed attraction will feature state-of-the-art exhibition spaces capable of
