The FE McWilliam Gallery & Studio in Banbridge is undergoing a major expansion project designed to enhance exhibition, education and visitor facilities while strengthening the venue’ s role within Northern Ireland’ s cultural infrastructure.
A significant redevelopment and expansion programme is underway at the FE McWilliam Gallery & Studio in Banbridge, County Down, with construction being delivered by McKelvey Construction. The project will extend and modernise the gallery complex, providing additional exhibition and learning space while improving visitor facilities across the site.
Owned and operated by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, the gallery is named after renowned Northern Irish sculptor Frederick Edward McWilliam and has become an established regional arts venue since opening in 2008. The latest investment represents a major expansion of the existing facility aimed at supporting increased visitor numbers and broader cultural programming.
Hall Black Douglas Architects is leading the design of the scheme, which includes new gallery accommodation, education facilities and upgraded public spaces. The extension has been planned to integrate with the existing building while introducing contemporary spaces capable of supporting larger exhibitions and expanded arts activity.
Construction work officially commenced during 2025, with the gallery remaining operational throughout much of the programme. Careful phasing has been incorporated into the construction strategy to minimise disruption to visitors, staff and ongoing exhibitions while enabling major structural works to proceed safely within the live cultural environment.
The expansion project includes the creation of additional exhibition galleries designed to accommodate larger-scale installations and touring exhibitions. New education and workshop spaces are also being incorporated, supporting the gallery’ s expanding programme of community engagement, school activities, and creative learning initiatives.
Improved visitor facilities form another key element of the redevelopment. Plans include upgraded reception areas, enhanced circulation routes and improved accessibility measures designed to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for audiences. External works and landscaping improvements are also included within the wider project scope.
The scheme received additional financial support through a £ 200,000 funding allocation announced by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, supplementing the wider multi-million pound investment programme already committed to the project.
McKelvey Construction is responsible for delivering the building works, including structural alterations, extension construction, refurbishment of existing accommodation and coordination of specialist gallery environments. The programme requires careful integration of environmental controls, lighting systems and exhibition infrastructure necessary for modern gallery operation.
