Internally, the school now includes refurbished teaching spaces, upgraded pupil support areas, a modernised library, staff facilities and a new gym hall. The phased delivery programme also introduced new administration areas and enhanced infant teaching accommodation.
The project serves the communities of Brunstane and Portobello and supports education provision for more than 250 pupils alongside early years facilities. Improvements to indoor environmental quality, thermal comfort and accessibility are intended to create healthier and more adaptable learning spaces for future generations.
Alongside physical construction works, the programme also delivered community benefits through local engagement initiatives and employment opportunities linked to the site. These included work placements and support for local organisations during the construction period.
The Brunstane Primary School project highlights the growing role of deep retrofit in public sector construction, showing how existing educational estates can be transformed through coordinated investment in fabric performance, renewable energy systems and modern learning environments.
