CURRICULUM GUIDE 2014 AP Arts Survey With a minimum enrollment of 5 students, this discussion addresses the importance of art and theatre courses to a comprehensive education. An excellent course for senior year moving on to a post-secondary study in the Humanities and life sciences. ENGLISH (LANGUAGE) JUNIOR REQUIRED COURSES: ACADEMIC LANGUAGE I (LANO1A) A beginning course for students proficient in English language, this course covers the four essential areas of language: speaking, writing, grammar, and interpretation of a variety of texts. In this course, students will go beyond the basics of language to better understand how the choices made by script writers, authors, poets, and even comedians are deliberately constructed to create meaning. Prerequisites: 80% or higher in 8 th grade language OR 75% or higher on the Gavin Academy language skills test. APPLIED LANGUAGE I (LANO1P) A beginning course for students that focuses on the essential understanding of the English language, this course covers three essential areas of language: speaking, writing, and grammar. Students will also learn methods of formatting documents such as letters, e-mail messages, telephone and interview skills, and how to ask questions that will increase understanding of a subject. Prerequisites: None. APPLIED LITERACY (LITO1P) This course is meant for new English speakers and students in differentiated classrooms who are interested in learning literacy skills. The course will focus on the basics of learning to read, write, and form letters in an encouraging and supportive environment. This course is open to all students whether or not they are registered at the academy as students. Students age 15+ can take the course. Classes are separated by age group only. APPLIED LITERACY II (LITO2P) This course follows applied literacy I and is meant to assist students who wish to continue at the Academy beginning at Academic Language I, or are hoping to upgrade their skills to be considered for entrance to the applied program at a brick-and-mortar secondary school. Literacy II follows up on skills learned in Literacy I while building the skills necessary for text interpretation and understanding. Prerequisite: Applied Literacy. ACADEMIC LANGUAGE II (LANO2A) This course will foster a deeper understanding of important English Language concepts while teaching many of the skills necessary for success in a Post-Secondary environment. By the end of this course, dedicated students will be able to interpret a variety of texts and express their findings in a way that meets or exceeds the current Postsecondary standard. Prerequisites: 75% or better in Academic Language I, 80% or better in Applied Language I AND 75% or better on the Gavin Academy academic language test. 5
