CURRICULUM GUIDE 2014 VISUAL ART VISUAL ART I (AVI001) This course is exploratory in nature, offering an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the principles and elements of design and the expressive qualities of various materials by using a range of media, processes, techniques, and styles. A basic history of artistic styles and design will be interspersed with other course materials. VISUAL ART II (AVI002) This course enables students to further develop their knowledge, skills, and historical understanding in visual arts. Students will use the creative process to explore a wide range of themes through a linear course of study that builds concepts upon one another. Using the Gavin Academy crawl-then-walk principal, we will lead students through an understanding of color theory, drawing, colorwork, and digital design. Prerequisite: Visual Art I or equivalent. WORLD CRAFT (AVI00W) Learn Geography through the lens of the arts: begin in China learning papercraft, move through Europe learning to create wood carvings, sculptures, and paintings, and find your way back to North America where we will learn to make corn husk baskets. Hands-on learning helps to cement knowledge: by the end of the course, the student will come to a better understanding of historical principals, as well as an appreciation of world cultures. CRAFTY HISTORY Learn History through the lens of the arts: begin by creating your own “paints” out of berries in order to create paintings on rock, move through the Middle Ages as you weave a simple tapestry, paint your way through the renaissance, and create a bracelet with the ancient Mayans. Hands-on learning helps to cement knowledge: by the end of the course, the student will understand historical facts and have developed an understanding of ancient peoples as human beings. KNITTING I A beginner’s course in knitting that will teach students how to read patterns, cast on, bind off, work along rows, and change colours.
