CURRICULUM GUIDE 2014 MATHEMATICS FOR COLLEGE TECHNOLOGY (MAT4C) This course enables students to extend their knowledge of algebra. Students will investigate and apply properties of polynomial, exponential, and trigonometric functions; continue to represent functions numerically, graphically, and algebraically; develop facility in simplifying expressions and solving equations; and solve problems that address the applications of algebra, trigonometry, vectors, and geometry. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems. This course prepares students for a variety of college technology programs as well as apprenticeship in the trades. FOUNDATIONS FOR COLLEGE MATHEMATICS (MAT4P) This course enables students to broaden their understanding of real-world applications of mathematics. Students will analyze data using statistical methods; solve problems involving applications of geometry and trigonometry; solve financial problems connected with annuities, budgets, and renting or owning a home; simplify expressions; and solve equations. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems. This course prepares students for college programs in areas such as business, human services, and for certain skilled trades. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT II (MAT4F) This course enables students to broaden their understanding of mathematics as it is applied to the workplace and daily life. Students will investigate questions involving the use of statistics; apply the concept of probability to solve problems involving familiar situations; investigate accommodation costs, create household budgets, and prepare a personal income tax return; use proportional reasoning; estimate and measure; and apply geometric concepts to create designs. Students will consolidate their mathematical skills as they solve problems and communicate their thinking. Prerequisites: MAT3F PRACTICAL MATHEMATICS (MATH) This course enables students to broaden their understanding of mathematics as it is applied by mathematicians, statisticians, engineers, and other professionals in mathematically related careers. This survey course goes over the history of mathematical discovery, the works of accomplished mathematicians, and the current trend toward mathematically centred visual and literary texts. This course will engage left-brained and right-brained students alike in the fascinating world of mathematical discovery. Practical mathematics is open only to Academy students, however the Practical Mathematics discussion group is open to community members as well. LANGUAGES The study of languages at the Academy is achievement, not level-based. Students will study at their own pace and the emphasis will be on mastery. 14
