The Acqua Alta (“high water”) reached six feet, inundating more than 85% of the city - a tragedy only topped by 1966’s Novem- ber flood which submerged 100% of the city. For- merly, tidal flooding occurred in late fall and early spring, and four times yearly, from 1966 to 2007, affecting 11% of the city. Now, sea level rise causes frequent flooding. Advice: Book a trip to Italy now; Venice awaits, but, sadly, not forever. In the U.S., Miami Beach has spent $500 million to install 80 pumps, to raise roads, and to repair sea- walls, owing to flooding. The city’s mayor, not a “cli- mate denier,” admits that this effort is a temporary fix. There are many corroborative books and docu- mentaries available, with the inherent message: Before traveling, research the effect of global warm- ing upon the destination. Start packing.
