In addition to some really quite obscure jokes ( a nod to Red Dead Redemption , astoundingly ) there are occasional nods which might be references , or might simply reveal a similar frame of mind to other creators . The line “ do you know where the word robot comes from ?” also appears in The World ’ s End from Edgar Wright ’ s Cornetto Trilogy , which would be an obvious lifting of a line - if Your Friends Close hadn ’ t been released three months earlier .

Needless to say , if you ’ re in the same mind as the people who made the chronically funny Pegg and Frost films , that ’ s a good place to be . The writing behind Phillip ’ s wry observations and snappy put-downs is razor sharp and it ’ s no surprise - you wouldn ’ t be eager to waste your best known talent .

It ’ s difficult to write of the film ’ s ending without spoilers , but suffice to say it ’ s one you can see coming if you try , but which will have you grinning the whole way through regardless .

While it might not be

the flashiest film you ’ ll ever see , Your Friends Close is a generally tightly written and well told story of deeply unhappy people treating each other appallingly , and therefore appeals perfectly to my British sensibilities . It also has a punchy and appropriate soundtrack ( easily slipped in under the excuse of a house party ) to keep the energy up throughout .

The risk is that it will become lost to history - it ’ s virtually unknown online , was backed through Kickstarter to the tune of $ 10,000 and hasn ’ t made much noise since . But its director , Jocelyn Kelvin , recently added the full movie free to Vimeo . If you ’ ve got 80 minutes spare , and no more games to play - watch these people play games with each other .
