Geography

Geography ’ s mission is to generate high quality research and teaching focused on the interactions between the human and physical environment . Research provides information and ideas for solving real world problems including climate change , terrorism , urban systems , and human and natural hazards . Researchers and students study the role of drought and fire in desert grasslands of the American Southwest and a 154 billion ton aquifer under Greenland ’ s ice sheet . Students have the opportunity to learn about Geographic Information Systems ( GIS ), digital Earth imagery ( remote sensing ) and spatial modeling , and then apply what they have learned in several community projects like the Salt Lake Cooperative County Plan ( CCP ) and the Ashley National Forest Research Project .
