Spanish I
Grades 9, 10, 11

Spanish I is an introduction to the basic proficiencies in language: listening, speaking, reading, writing and cultural understanding. Students study
basic grammar and vocabulary and experience an introduction to Spanish culture, including art, music, food and history of the 21 Spanish-speaking
countries.
Spanish II
Grades 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Spanish I
In Spanish II, students expand their proficiencies in listening, speaking, reading, writing and cultural understanding. Grammar is extensively
analyzed. Spanish culture receives continued emphasis with the use of videos, internet technology and classroom experiences.
Honors Spanish III
Grades 11, 12
1 Unit
Prerequisite: At least a“ C” average in Spanish II
Spanish III continues exercises in all language proficiencies. Students are expected to communicate with the teacher in the Spanish language during regular classroom
situations. This language course continues analysis of the language and grammar and begins to shift into the use of the Spanish language to study vocabulary and
culture.
Honors Spanish IV
Grades 11, 12

Prerequisite: At least a“ C” average in Honors Spanish III
This course continues Spanish language study with exercises in literature and culture. All areas of Spanish language proficiency( listening, speaking, reading, writing
and culture) are utilized as students study the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Students are expected to communicate with the teacher in the Spanish
language during regular classroom situations.
AP Spanish
Grades 11, 12

Prerequisite:“ C” average in Honors Spanish IV
This course prepares students for the AP exam. Students will work on grammar and usage, reading for interpretation and higher order thinking skills. Students are
expected to concentrate on improving their skills during class and at home.
Latin
Latin I
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: None
Latin I is an introduction to basic grammatical syntax of the Latin language. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary, word derivation and similarities in English. Selected
works of various Roman authors are read along with textbook selections. Greco-Roman mythology and history are also incorporated into the course to expose the
student to an overview of these two important components of the total study of Latin.
Latin II
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
1 Unit
Prerequisite: Latin I
Further studies in Latin grammar are designed to enhance reading skills and increase vocabulary, both in Latin and English. Emphasis is placed on ability to translate.
Readings include Jason and the Argonauts, the Labors of Hercules, and selections from Julius Caesar’ s De Bello Gallico. Roman history and culture continue to be
stressed.
Honors Latin III
Grades 10, 11, 12
1 Unit
Prerequisite: At least a“ C” average in Latin II
Emphasis is on translating Latin poetry and prose and analyzing new grammatical structures and complex Latin syntax. Roman history and culture pertinent to the
authors read in the course will be closely studied. Authors include Cicero, Catullus, Horace and Ovid.
Honors Latin IV Grades 11, 12 1 Unit Prerequisite: Honors Latin III and must take AP Latin the following semester. This class covers the first half of the AP Latin Literature course. This college level course involves the intense study of Latin literature, including works by Cicero, Catullus, Horace and Ovid. This course will provide students with both prose and poetry combined with high interest material. Issues of Roman morality, the role of women and the intellectual tradition of Rome will be covered. Class discussions and writing assignments will consist of in-depth analysis of stylistic elements and themes in the literature.
AP Latin
Grades 11, 12

Prerequisite: Honors Latin IV in the previous semester.
This college level course involves the intense study of Latin literature, including works by Cicero, Catullus, Horace and Ovid. This course will provide students with
both prose and poetry combined with high interest material. Issues of Roman morality, the role of women and the intellectual tradition of Rome will be covered.
Class discussions and writing assignments will consist of in-depth analysis of stylistic elements and themes in the literature.
