Alternative Social Studies I( Govt / US History) Grade 9 1 Unit Prerequisite: Department Approval Government / US History is designed to provide the student with a basic background in United States history, knowledge of government and political design, citizenship issues, personal economics, and the local geography they need to become responsible citizens and consumers. It covers the historical background of the development of the United States, including colonization and the Constitution, the structure of government, and the major rights, responsibilities and protections inherent with citizenship. This course also covers the roles and jurisdictions of state and local government, issues of personal economics, and basic geography.

Colleges recommend that students take the final level of their foreign language during the senior year. Students taking a foreign language tend to score better on the SAT and ACT. All 16 branches of the UNC University system require at least 2 years of the same foreign language( Clemson University requires 3).
