Lecture Evenin
Previously the lecture evening committee was jointly run through the seminar committee , this year it was decided to run it independently under the auspices of Kim MacCallum We hosted a number of evening events plus one lecture in the morning ; we found the evening events attendance was dwindling . The morning lecture proved to be a hit and was well attended .
Emulsion Lecture Evening – 16 March
Presented by Dr Heidi Rolfes , senior lecturer at the University of Pretoria , and director of Wampum Grooming Products . Heidi took delegates on a technical journey through emulsions , surfactants , critical micelle concentration , breakdown mechanisms , stabilisation , and predicting shelf life using visual observation , microscopy , viscometry , particle size distribution and rheology . She explained the background of emulsions , revealing that they are ‘ disperse systems consisting of two immiscible liquids and a third component : the emulsifier ’.
This lecture was very well received with Heidi staying quite a while longer to answer many questions . Every single delegate walked away with some very valuable information .
Wire Yourself for Happiness – 13 April
Taryn Harris is a professional life and executive coach and creator of the In-Body workshops and programmes . Tarryn reminded lecture attendees how important it is for them to check in with themselves on a daily basis . We tend to go about life without actually checking if we are okay . Modern lifestyles are filled with so many stress factors and external distractions that our minds are inclined to spend too much time in the negative ( red / fight or flight space ) and not enough time in the happy ( green space ). Stress develops in the mind yet its effects are felt throughout the body . Harris taught us about the dangers of the brain being in the red too long and how cortisol actually kills off areas and can make your IQ drop . Delegates left supercharged and excited with many engaging with Taryn for many minutes after the lecture .
