Rugby Round Up
The year 7 rugby team have had a challenging first year. Thankfully towards the end of the season the results on the pitch started to reflect our hard work in training.
For our opening game we went to Radyr Comprehensive School and won the match by a solid margin, 17-5, with three team tries from different players and one conversion. Next, we lost heavily against Plasmawr, 48-5, but learnt many valuable lessons. Afterwards we played a strong Whitchurch side and narrowly lost 17-24. After two losses confidence was low but our team played well away at Ysgol Glantaf and we won 19-17. We deserved the victory and as a team it was a much improved performance, we had just beaten the team that would become the Cardiff Cup Champions.
Then after a long break we were again on the bus and off to Monmouth where we lost 29-12 against a well organised team coached by a former Welsh player. Despite the boys being disappointed to lose, their spirits were lifted by a tasty pie and chips in the state of the art clubhouse! In the first round of the cup unfortunately we drew one of the tournament favourites, Whitchurch. We started steadily but after a few well worked tries by Whitchurch they were worthy winners, 41-5, and our cup run was over.
These were the first few games of the season. In the New Year, thanks to Mr. Lloyd and Mr French, Year 7 had many more fixtures organised which helped us to overcome our poor run of form with some more victories. The season ended with the Cardiff Schools Sevens tournament in Llandaff Fields.
With a solid training session to prepare ourselves for the new style of seven a side rugby, the squad of ten boys were ready to face their opponents in the Cardiff Schools Sevens competition. We got off to a great start when the minibus broke down on the side of the motorway, although we did make it to the tournament in time. In our first match we faced a strong and fast Cardiff HS. We had lost to them in 15’s but got a well-deserved win, 21-0. Next we faced Glantaf and again deservedly won 14-12. In our second-to-last game we won 19-14. Despite losing to Whitchurch 12-10 we were overall victorious winners.
We started as a bunch of boys wanting to play rugby. We are grateful to Mr. Lloyd who has developed us as individuals and as a team. We are all looking forward to next season!
