Cloud Cover: Protecting
Content Everywhere
t the heart of Cisco’s content
protection for TV Everywhere
is VideoGuard multi-DRM
(Digital Rights Management). “The
key is that it has built-in multiple
layers of DRM to handle the multiple
varieties of video play back out there
on the market and on devices,” says
Avi Ben-Simon, DRM product
manager.
A
Anxious to match OTT
challengers, most payTV providers now have
TV Everywhere
offerings. This brings
the challenge of content
protection over
unmanaged networks
and on unmanaged
devices. Cisco’s
commitment to Cloud
provision provides the
solutions.
VideoGuard Server is well established for
bringing secure cardless Conditional Access
delivery to Set Tops or Gateways by using
unique elements of the most popular
hardware chipsets to download new
functional and security features without
interrupting the pay-TV service. This means
providers can cost-effectively bring
significant new pay-TV revenue
opportunities to their platform, with ondemand services that use either sessionbased or pre-encrypted content, nextgeneration cloud DVR solutions and content
transfer between set-top boxes and
unmanaged consumer electronic devices in
the home network. Cisco VideoGuard Server

can be deployed as a standalone content
protection solution or as part of the end-toend Cisco Videoscape Video Gateway
solution.
Similarly, VideoGuard multi-DRM can be
deployed as part of an end to end solution or
alongside legacy platforms as a service
provider reaches out to provide its content
beyond the network to unmanaged devices.
“We started by providing DRM solutions for
the operators for their internal clients, all
very specific and so that highly sensitive
content could be transferred and played on
specific devices. The second wave was
adding Simulcrypt and multiple DRMs with
APIs for new DRMs in a much faster
development cycle,” Ben-Simon explains.
Provider friendly flexibility is a must with UI
development based in HTML5 so the client
can provide as many services as they want as
soon as they want.
As to the essential security of the content
provided to subscriber’s devices, Ben-Simon
reveals “we have created a technology that is
by its nature dynamic. There are private
instructions for every device and every
refresh of mode can render a hack
nonviable, we call it ‘moving target
