P a g e 4 Do You Know Where Your Child Is? Every Second? Human Microchip Implant Neilisha P. Charles Kidnappers, be aware! The advent of Human Microchip Implantation, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration since 2004, gives us the opportunity to protect our children exceptionally. This is the genius behind Human Microchip Implantation. This futuristic piece of technology can help us track our kids, allowing parents to be able to reach their children easily in cases of emergencies. That is, if our children are lost, injured and helpless or kidnapped. Parents can not only use microchips to track their kids, but they can also allow for their kids’ medical records to readily available in times of emergencies. With the surge of Human Trafficking of children, microchip technology would be a definite solution. Some may see it as invading the child’s privacy, but which parent won’t have ‘a piece of mind’ knowing that their child is safe. Technology is advancing every day; why not use it to make life easier for us parents. Microchips and other Radio-Frequency Identification De- vices (RFID) have been imbedded in pets and attached to items in order to track them for years. VeriChip is one; it's been sold in the US since 2002 and was approved for implantation in humans by the FDA in 2004, in spite of the fact that tests from the mid-1990s showed that the implanted microchips had "induced" cancer in laboratory animals, with most of the tumors encasing the implants. By 2007, about 2,000 of the devices had been implanted in humans around the world. This is a possible option in Trinidad and Tobago’s fight to protect our children.
