Music in China 中国民乐讲座
On November 8 & 15, Confucius Institute hosted the Music in China seminar, taught by NC State music professor Dr. Kramer. This seminar introduced students to Chinese musical instruments, styles, genres, and contexts. It also featured video taken by Dr. Kramer on his research trips to Shanxi, Shaanxi, Jiangxi, and Qinghai Provinces. Special attention were given to music’ s roles in such life-
cycle events as weddings and funerals; and cylindrical events like harvest and Lunar New Year. Music of minority groups such as Tibetan and Mangghuer were also considered. Although some of the students who attended had previous experiences with traditional Chinese music and instruments, many claimed that they still learned a great deal from this two-session seminar and thought the incorporation of the various multimedia resources into the seminar proved both
engaging and educational.
