Learn by colour HOW TO SHAPE SHOTS The only things that should change to hit draws and fades are the swing path and face angle. BALL POSITION AND CLUBFACE REFERENCE The red strip between the feet gives you a consistent ball position where it intersects with the target line and the red strip outside the ball gives a reference for a square clubface at address. HIT A DRAW The green strip is now pointing just right of the target, so that’s the direction the clubhead should travel. The red strip is between that swing path and the target line, so that’s where the clubface should point at impact – open to the target, but closed to the path. DOWNSWING PATH The blue strip shows where the clubhead should travel in a smooth, calm takeaway to set the club on plane for a straight shot. HIT A FADE The blue strip is attacking the ball from the outside and the green strip is now pointing just left of the target, so that’s the direction the clubhead should travel. The red strip is between that swing path and the target line, so that’s where the clubface should point at impact – closed to the target, but open to the path. November 2017 Golf World 73
