Cape Industries Showcase flaunts new technology
By John Ackermann
The 2016 Cape Industries Showcase brought together more than 100 exhibitors on 6 – 8 September, showcasing equipment, products, and services for oil, gas, petrochemical, offshore, logistics, maritime, and marine professionals.
Some of the following exhibitors from our industry also attended the expo.
AOL was showcasing its new mobile field laboratory, a result of three years of development by Analysers On-Line( AOL). The company offers monitoring solutions for environmental parameters, for example the monitoring of water pollution in industrial processes. All solutions are locally made in Germiston— proudly South African.
Bristol Specialty Gases is based in Dubai and was started four years ago to provide sample gases for calibration. It supplies to a client in South Africa and has not experienced problems with the air freighting of gas cylinders.
The Perishable Product Export Control Board( PPECB) checks about 25 trailers( both new and used) in Cape Town every month for certification for the transport of perishable export products. Certification is valid for one year. All road motor transport( RMT) arriving in Cape Town for transfer directly into reefer containers is also checked. Sharief Nair, cold chain lead assessor based in Montague Gardens, commented that the avocado crops are down this year because of the drought.

in cold storage. The company is based in Germany, with a strong platform in the Swiss market for the past 38 years.
Its conveyors offer a solution that does not require doors, which normally adds to the load on the refrigeration plant. It also offers warehouse management and auto guides for vehicles.
SSI Schaefer advises that a critical requirement for mobiles for cold storage is a high level of evenness of the floor and it needs quality workmanship in casting. The steel in mobiles for cold storage applications are of a different grade, but the wheels and other components are similar to those used in ambient warehouses. Cable and control box sealing is of utmost importance in cold storage applications.
David Eisenhut, director for global sales support, made his first visit to South Africa for the Cape Industries Showcase. He sees big potential in the cold storage industry in South Africa.“ The expanding population of South Africa and growth in buying power will increase the demand for foodstuffs, fast foods and convenient meals,” he says.“ All these products will need more temperature controlled storage and we have much to offer in the way of storage solutions for cold stores and DCs.”
