INCORPORATING COLD CHAIN
GIZ workshop
gets refrigeration industry talking
The first of the three GIZ workshops looking at “Increasing efficiency in
refrigerated distribution” kicked off in Johannesburg on 4 October 2016, led by
two experienced trainers all the way from Germany.
T
he day boasted a full agenda, actively
involving the 20-odd participants from
all areas of the distribution chain: from
body builders to retailers.
The trainers — Konstantin Schüssler,
managing partner of Schüssler Spedition
(a German-based temperature control
transport company), and Prof. Dr
Michael Huth, logistics and supply chain
management, University of Applied
Sciences Fulda, House of Logistics and
Mobility — shared their knowledge of what
has worked for them back home, and
assisted all involved in coming up with ideas
to improve efficiencies in their line of work.
The Durban workshop took place on 5
October, with Cape Town following on
7 October.

Neele Wesseln, a German university
student, visited South Africa from
6 September to help plan the
workshops and to benchmark
refrigeration logistics in Europe
against South Africa to see how they
compare.
She also went to Cape Town
to interview key people to gather
information for her research. She
met with, among others, Green
House, Fast ‘n Fresh, Vector
Logistics and Elite Fibre, and even
networked with representatives of
Stellenbosch University — all to gain
a better understanding of the local
refrigerated logistics industry.
