ACTIVITY: STAGES OF LABOR
Whole class or smaller groups of 3 – 6 people 10 – 15 minutes Unit 1: Stages of Labor
To help parents identify characteristics of the various phases and stages of labor.
Print the following pages on card stock, cut out and laminate. Attach a small magnet to the back of each card. Print the table on page 171 as an answer key and make one copy for each student( but don’ t distribute them until after the activity). Prior to beginning this activity, on a whiteboard, arrange the label cards like the chart below.
Distribute cards to the class. One at a time, have them read cards aloud, then bring the card to the board and place it in its category. Discuss how some cards could apply to more than one stage / phase. Some

cards may fit better on a line in between phases( and it is appropriate to have parents place them there). After all the cards are on the board, distribute copies of the corresponding Stages of Labor handout.
Divide the class into groups. Give each group a set of cards. Instruct them to arrange the labels on a table or the floor as shown below. Once

Methods cards as quickly as possible to“ race” the other groups. If desired, give points for speed and accuracy and a prize to the winners.
