Brother Rice High School has announced that, in the next year or so,
the school will eliminate a courtyard
to add an Olympic-sized swimming pool for the championship Swim
and Dive team and, coming soon, the
water polo team. The pool will be
for the exclusive use of the teams; no
one else will be able to use it. To keep
everyone happy, a separate swimming
pool will be installed on top of the atrium for general use. This pool above
the atrium will be more of a “beach
scene,” with imported palm trees from
the Bahamas and white sand. The
rooftop pool will be available yearround and have a retractable roof for
the winter.
During the school year, the rooftop
swimming pool will be open from
3:00 to 9:00 p.m. During the summer,
the hours will expand to 10:30 a.m. to
9:00 p.m. All students will receive a
pass to the pool as part of their tuition,
and they can bring up to three guests.
Access will new elevator from D-Wing
will provide access to the roof.
The renovations for the Olympic
pool will start this summer, and the
renovations for the rooftop beach will
start in the fall.
Me, Myself, and I
Senior squash star reveals his keys to success
Charles with an excellent ‘get’
The Chieftain’s Managing Editor, Charlie
Beauregard, recently had a chance to sit
down and talk to Senior and Colby Squash
commit, Charles Beauregard.
Charlie: So squash is a sport that many
students at Rice may not be familiar
with. Tell us a little about the sport.
Charles: Squash is an incredible sport,
and I really love it. There is nothing like
being on the court, with the people and
hitting the things with the rackets. It is a
pure adrenaline rush. If I could compare it to anything, I would compare it
to that feeling when you’re really hungry, and then your mom comes home
with groceries, and then makes pizza
rolls. It is an incredible experience.
Talk around the school says that
you’re one of the best squash players
in the state. Care to elaborate?
Well, I’m a pretty humble guy, but,
honestly, I think I could be the best
squash player to ever pick up a racket.
Like, think of Roger Federer, Rafael
Nadal, and Novak Djokovic all combined into one person, but playing
squash. So, with my pure talent, it was
no surprise to me that I was ranked No.
1 in the state.
Are you aware that I play squash, too?
I mean, I’m not aware, and nothing
against you, Charles, but considering
you’re not nationally ranked, there is no
way I would know you play squash.

Charlie doing journalism research
I mean, did you know I’m one of the
top squash players in the state?
lol, good one.
You know what, forget it.
I will.
A lot of students at Rice are not familiar with Colby College. What drew you
to Colby?
Well, when the D1 offers started rolling
in, I wasn’t surprised. I took my time
looking at each school on the East Coast
and evaluating their important qualities: nightlife, party scene, and male
to female ratio (6:1). After all of that
research, I realized that Colby was the
perfect place for me.
The Class of 2016 boasts many good
athletes. How do you think you compare to them?
I mean, some of those guys can throw
a baseball, or stand on ice, or
