Christ Child Connection Endures Relationship has blossomed since introduction in 2011 By Brandon Sebou Chieftain Staff As part of the school’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2010-11, the students of Brother Rice began working with underprivileged children of the Christ Child House of Detroit, hosting the residents monthly on our campus and frequently going to the facility to volunteer. It is a relationship that has lasted ever since. The kids who live in Christ Child usually have been neglected or abused and moved into the facility in Detroit. The volunteers working at Christ Child help to treat the emotional and physical wounds of the children. Christ Child has been a major part of Detroit since the early 1900’s, and it relies on the assistance of over 500 volunteers. In addition to monthly visits from the kids of Christ Child to Brother Rice, Rice’s mentor groups go to Christ Child each year and do yard work on our annual Day of Service. Christ Child always has a job for anyone looking for those crucial community service hours. Brother Rice was featured in Hour Detroit in 2011 after being awarded with the Mary Virginia Merrick Award for its partnership with Christ Child. The award is named after the founder of Christ Child. Christ Child residents are always looking for toys, bikes, balls, and play sets for the kids. Christ Child has provided a very necessary service, and it will continue to do so as long as it gets help from communities like ours.
