Unique opportunities available
With Broadcasting Network
By Josh Geary
Chieftain Staff
The Brother Rice Broadcast Network
(BRBN) is one of the school’s newer clubs.
It provides a unique opportunity to connect
with the larger Brother Rice community. It
also is a good way to get involved with sports
at Rice, even if you are not as athletic as some
of the other students.
The club provides live broadcasts of Rice
sporting events over the internet. The link is
brrice.edu/broadcast. They also have over
400 followers on twitter (@BroRiceSports) and
bring sporting news
and big
stories to
whomever
wants to
read them.
The BRBN has been around for about five
years. Members of the club have broadcast
Rice games from Ford Field and Comerica
Park. Some members also have had the opportunity to meet Detroit sports media personalities such as Dan Dickerson (Tigers radio) and
George Blaha (Pistons TV).
This club accentuates what Brother Rice is
about. BRBN members get involved with the
student body and are very appreciated by our
student-athletes. Some coaches allow them to
travel with the team.
BRBN is one of things that makes the Rice
athletic program better than most. If you are
interested in broadcasting soccer, football,
basketball, hockey, baseball, lacrosse, or any
other sport, contact the moderator, Mr. McCarville, in room C129.

About Quiz Bowl
By Luke Stehney
Chieftain Staff
Quiz Bowl is another unique
activity that sets Brother Rice
apart from other schools. A lot of
students don’t know what Quiz
Bowl is, and they don’t know that
Brother Rice has a pretty good
program.
There are JV and Varsity
teams. Both compete about once
a month at various locations. The
teams compete in three matches
per meet. Points are scored by
how many questions are answered
correctly, with additional points for
bonus questions, immediately after a
question your team answered correctly.
Quiz Bowl begins in the late Fall,
around Thanksgiving, and lasts until
Spring. It requires a relatively minor
commitment, requiring only about
one day per month, and it is a lot of
fun. Colleges also love students who
participate in Quiz Bowl.
Any questions about Quiz Bowl
can be answered by the moderator,
Ms. Nuss, in room A106.
MUN Offers
Competition,
Cute Girls
By Josh Geary

One of Brother Rice’s more
underrated academic teams,
Model United Nations (MUN),
is a highly competitive and fun
activity. Moderated by the legendary Mr. Kuschel, the MUN team
has been highly successful over
the past few years.
MUN is a great way to meet
intelligent kids from all over the
state and country.
Here’s how it works: You are
assigned a nation (i.e. Canada)
and you work with other “nations” and attempt to solve world
issues.
It is more exciting than it
sounds. The team always spends
one weekend in January at the
University of Michigan at an
intense competition. The MUN
season ends in February, with a
trip to Georgetown for competiPAGE 6

tion with over 1,000 high-schoolers all
over the country.
If you would like information
about the team, you can contact the
author or next year’s likely President,
Evan Oesterle ’16.
Consider joining next year. MUN
looks spectacular on a college application and is a great way to boost your
public-speaking skills and problemsolving abilities. It also offers a rare
opportunity to meet cute girls at
competitions.
MUN is one of Rice’s most successful and exhilarating teams. It’s a
great group to join.
