This year, the Chieftain staff will review film and video in a new series called,“ What to Watch.” The inaugural article covers some of the most popular series on Netflix.“ Iron Fist” One of four Marvel Netflix Originals, this series focuses around Danny Rand. Danny’ s parents died in a plane crash that only he survived. Danny was raised and trained by monks, and he later became the superhero Iron Fist. The first season started off slow, basically covering his origins and his return to the city in which he grew up. The show takes off exponentially from there, and becomes very action-packed. The action scenes
are done well, although some of the characters come off as corny and unrealistic. The finale of the first season was pretty predictable, but the midseason plot twist was pretty good. The most recent season seemed stale, but the ending was good and left plenty of room for another season. Overall rating: 7.8 / 10
“ Luke Cage” Luke Cage is basically a bulletproof vigilante with super strength who wants to clean up the city of Harlem. Throughout the first two seasons, Cage holds back his power too much; he shows too much restraint. He has a Batman-like complex and Superman strength and durability. He wants to save and protect people with little-to-no killing. The first season was really good, but it lacked villains. This problem was answered in season two, when Luke fought against a worthy enemy: Bushmaster. The show also does crossovers with“ Iron Fist” and
“ Jessica Jones.” Luke and Iron Fist were a dynamic duo in comic books and die-hard fans get to see the two team up again, bringing a sense of nostalgia to its viewers. Overall rating: 8.9 / 10
“ Daredevil” This series focuses around the infamous Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a kid by a freak accident. Since the accident, all of Matt’ s other abilities have been enhanced, and he now has superhuman senses. At night, Matt becomes Daredevil, his superhero alter-ego who protects Hell’ s Kitchen, New York. The first of Netflix’ s Marvel shows to release,“ Daredevil” is the most realistic of the streaming network’ s five Marvel series. With a Batman-like vibe, it introduces“ the Punisher,” aka Frank Castle, a man with years of military training whose entire family was murdered. In the first two seasons, Daredevil got hurt and injured way too much, to the point that it got annoying and you expected him to keep getting hurt. Throughout the series, Daredevil struggles to hide his identity, and this causes many problems to arise, which adds a more realistic effect to the show overall. Overall rating: 9.1 / 10
