6 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER March 2021

Looking into Pompey Charbonneau

By ANNE SHEVLIN
He wasn ’ t born here , likely never traveled through the area and did not die here . Yet , Jean Baptiste ( Pompey ) Charbonneau left his mark and his name on our special community . He is immortalized with his famous mother Sacajawea , on her back in a cradleboard , in a number of images , sculptures and place names throughout our region , capturing the significance of this famous duo .
A young child during Lewis and Clark ’ s Corp of Discovery expedition , charting the Northwest territory in the early 1800s , Pompey soon learned his way around the mountains . He became skilled in trapping , guiding , interpreting , fur trading and prospecting . He traveled the world far and wide and learned several languages . The significance of this adventurous mountain man is not lost in the rich history of our region .
New frontiers in Charbonneau
We are making a bit of history of our own right here in Charbonneau . Our community is undergoing exciting
growth and changes . A beautiful new pavilion is in use in the Village Center . Construction will begin soon on the Activity Center , a project long in the making . A paddle club is under development on the Willamette River , the same waterway that was navigated over 200 years ago by Native Americans and French-Canadian trappers . An enhanced pickleball facility is under discussion . Before long , the existing Clubhouse will undergo a partial remodel to incorporate a new restaurant , a special place for residents and the public to gather with friends and family to enjoy a nice meal and a glass of wine .
Pompey ’ s Outpost
To capture the unique history of our community and the region , the working title of the new restaurant is proposed to be “ Pompey ’ s Outpost .” Pictures , written material and historic memorabilia will be prominent in the décor . Pompey ’ s will feature a cool , clean , stone and steel atmosphere with accents of natural wood and comfortable seating . It will offer a casual yet upscale dining experience , serving approachable and craveable American fare . The menus will feature creative burgers , sandwiches , small bites and other American classics . Pompey ’ s food offerings will be accompanied by a beverage program that will showcase craft and classic cocktails as well as an assortment of wine and beers on tap . Pompey ’ s Outpost will also serve as a graband-go shop for residents and golfers alike looking for quick , small snacks , beverages and sundries .
The Village Center Development Task Force , under the leadership of residents Kathy Fuller and Anne Shevlin , is partnering with OB Sports in the development of the design , theme and atmosphere of the new restaurant . OB Sports has been in the business of developing and managing golf and country clubs since 1972 , primarily in the western United States . They currently manage Charbonneau Golf Course , and will also apply their expertise to the new restaurant . The company has been involved with more than 120 clubs , most all of which have some form of food and beverage restaurant . OB

Capturing the history of our community

Sports also has tremendous roots in the Pacific Northwest . They developed both Langdon Farms and The Reserve Vineyards , each of which present a unique theme and still manage Langdon Farms today . Additionally , they manage the prestigious and private Tetherow Golf Club in Bend , Mill Creek Country Club in Everett , Washington and the notable Gamble Sands in Brewster , Washington , which has been named as the best in the state by several publications .
Let us hear from you
We are excited about the developments underway in Charbonneau , and the efforts to capture our unique name and history . Under the management of OB Sports with their experience and leadership , we are confident in the future of our new restaurant . The task force members would like to hear from residents regarding our plans for the restaurant theme and name . If you have other suggestions or ideas , please let us know by contacting either Kathy or Anne , or leave a message with Kim Hosford in the Clubhouse office . We look forward to hearing from you .
