Seasoned Niner by Cheryl Barnum
If you ever wanted to meet a Niner that does it all , then introduce yourself to Laraine Vazzana . This is an accomplished woman in everything she pursues . Laraine moved to Charbonneau 30 years ago and joined the Niners in 2006 . She grew up in Portland and her father was a scratch golfer . It was her dad who taught her how to golf and to this day she still plays with his putter !
Laraine ’ s husband , Peter , encouraged her to golf at Charbonneau . Joanna Sawyer invited her to play on Member / Guest Day . She also worked on the Scramble Committees and the couples golf activities . Laraine was active as a dancer with the Charbonnettes and played the mother in the production “ Mama Mia .” She is very active in the Pink Ball auction in which she and Peter donated a gourmet dinner for six each year for three years ! She bid and won condos at the beach , wine tasting parties and helped wherever needed at the auction .
Laraine was a realtor for 17 years and had a stained glass business where she created suspended ceilings . Her windows and dividers were featured in homes on the Street of Dreams . Her hobbies are embroidery , quilting , gardening and making delicious fudge , which she has done for over 40 years !
Cooking and setting a beautiful table are probably Laraine ’ s favorite hobbies . She could easily give Julia Child a run for her money . She has a collection of over 150 tablecloths and 200 napkin rings . Believe me , at Christmas time , “ Griswolds ” have nothing on the Vazannas ! Their home should be featured in Better Homes and Gardens and PGE should send them a thank you note !
Laraine said her favorite part of being a Niner is the camaraderie with the members . So to you , Laraine , we all say “ Bon Appetit !”
And now let ’ s welcome a new member ! Claudia DeVries and her husband Bob moved to Charbonneau in 2015 . They were from Southern California near Knott ’ s Berry Farm and moved to Puyallup , Washington where they lived for roughly 40 years . They moved to Charbonneau to be near their daughter and 12-year-old grandson , who live in West Linn . She also has a son living in Gig Harbor .
Claudia enjoys sewing , quilting and knitting ( belongs to the Knotty Knitters Group ), as well as baking , reading , cooking , gardening and riding her bike with her husband . They were black-diamond run skiers for years before she broke her hip a few years ago . At the time , they spent several months each year in Canada just to ski , which was 50-80 days a year !
We are delighted to have you , Claudia !
