moving along . Sculptor Ben Mefford is in the process of paring off pieces of the huge granite block to make it more manageable . We all celebrated the first step , which consisted of removal of a 2,500-pound section from one side . Using a diamond bladed saw and wedges and hammer , the piece fell away with a satisfying crack sound , setting the stage for much more . A photographic “ Follow the Sculpture Project ” will soon be up on our website as each step is documented with photos and video . An interesting side note , shared by Ben during our recent board meeting : Four years ago , Ben traveled to Japan to study sculpture with a noted Japanese sculptor . When he got off the plane , a local TV production team approached him as part of a show , “ Why Did You Come to Japan ,” that interviewed foreign passengers to see why they were landing in Japan . Wary of accidentally embarrassing his host , Ben instead mentioned that a
goal of his trip was to meet his childhood pen pal . The TV crew thought that was awesome and filmed Ben ’ s efforts to connect with his former pen pal , which he actually did . It was broadcast on national television in Japan , and he thought that was the end of it until the production team contacted him again recently to follow up for the show .
There haven ’ t been many travelers to Japan during COVID-19 , so they wanted to know what he had been up to since visiting . He shared his current effort on the pumpkin sculpture and expects they will include it in the new episode . Even though it won ’ t be broadcast here , we are excited to imagine our local project featured on Japanese TV .
Finally , as I write this article , John and I are preparing for a trip to Colorado to spend some time with our family . For us , Independence Day will signal our independence from mask wearing and at last , celebrating the ability to be with family on this most American of holidays . I hope you all can have a similar joyous celebration with those you love .
