February 2021 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 13
Charbonneau Arts Association

Planning for the next Festival of the Arts to begin
I am pleased to be writing my first article as the newly elected president of Charbonneau Arts Association
MCLAIN
( CAA ), after several years of contributing to The Villager on behalf of CWGA . Transitioning my articles from golf activities to the creative arts is an adventure , not unlike my own , as my passion for golf has been joined by my relatively new passion for painting .
In both cases , I have “ jumped in with both feet ” in order to further the goals of the two organizations that are such a big part of my life in Charbonneau . I guess it ’ s a case of one feeding the physical side , while the other feeds the emotional . It sort of fits the Valentine ’ s Day theme of this month ’ s issue . Love in all its forms ... for golf and for art and for each other !
As I become more intrenched in the activities of CAA and its signature Festival of the Arts , I need to repeat my predecessor ’ s assertion in the January issue that you don ’ t have to be an artist or artisan in order to participate in the planning at the festival or even at every level in the association . If you aren ’ t an artist , you might have expertise that we need — event planning , web development and internet skills , social media skills , logistics , finance and accounting , public relations and marketing . As a small all-volunteer nonprofit association and organizer of a fundraising art festival , we need all of this kind of expertise and more .
We ’ ll soon begin planning the 2021 Festival of the Arts , with Rick Cady returning as chair of the Festival Organizing Committee . Once again , I repeat Eric ’ s request for volunteers to help with the many parts that make up a successful event . We welcome interested recruits . While we ’ re still unsure of the state of life by the time November rolls around , we hope to return to a live gallery experience , with a web component to build off of 2020 ’ s successful virtual event . If you are interested in becoming involved , please don ’ t hesitate to contact me ( cathi @ mclainco . com ) or Rick Cady ( cadyfoto @ gmail . com ).
With all that said , I must offer many kudos to my predecessor , Eric Hoem , who served as president for four years and will continue in an exofficio role as past president . Under Eric ’ s leadership , the festival has grown in numbers and stature , and thanks to Eric , we were able to secure two grants from the Clackamas County Cultural Coalition to allow the purchase of art display panels to replace the ones we ’ ve had to rent in prior years . In addition , we have just been notified of a new grant awarded to the Charbonneau Arts Association for $ 2,500 to support an exciting project , which will be managed by Benjamin Mefford , sculptor and CAA Board member . In the grant application , Ben describes his project this way : “ I ’ d like to carve a giant stone jack-o-lantern for Halloween 2021 , hopefully at least 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet . It ’ s based on a favorite childhood story of mine , The Biggest Pumpkin Ever , in which two mice work alternately day and night to unwittingly help each other grow ( you guessed it ) the biggest pumpkin ever . Then they agree to share the prize . It feels like a fitting sentiment for the world these days ... a symbol of collaboration .”
The Charbonneau Arts Association did not take on any financial obligation in relation to his grant but is the organizational sponsor and provides the educational dimension to the project , that will include coordinating with the art teachers at Canby and Wilsonville high schools to allow
